High-resolution Satellite Imagery: a Review of Metric Aspects

چکیده

With the era of commercial high-resolution earth observation satellites having dawned with the launch in September, 1999 of Ikonos-2, it is imperative that there is an understanding in the photogrammetric and remote sensing communities of the full metric potential of high-resolution satellite line scanner imagery. This paper discusses the metric exploitation of 1m satellite imagery, and specifically looks at the options available for multi-image restitution in situations where optimal ground point triangulation accuracy is sought. Such applications would include automated DTM generation and highaccuracy feature determination for both mapping and geopositioning. The paper commences with a brief discussion of accuracy aspects and then overviews the collinearity model for orientation/triangulation of line scanner imagery. Alternative restitution models are then reviewed. These include rational functions, the direct linear transformation and an affine projection approach. Each restitution model has its merits and limitations, and of central importance is the provision or lack of provision of the ‘camera models’ for the different high-resolution satellite systems. With the prevailing level of uncertainty over just what critical sensor calibration information will be made available by the satellite imaging companies, there is consequently a need for a range of alternative, practical approaches for extracting accurate 3D terrain information from 1m satellite imagery.

Object-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images

As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...

Object Level Strategy for Spectral Quality Assessment of High Resolution Pan-sharpen Images

Panchromatic and multi-spectral images produced by the remote sensing satellites are fused together to provide a multi-spectral image with a high spatial resolution at the same time. The spectral quality of the fused images is very important because the quality of a large number of remote sensing products depends on it. Due to the importance of the spectral quality of the fused images, its eval...

Application of Coarse to Fine Level Set Segmentation in Satellite Images

Segmentation of vegetated areas is inevitable in precision agriculture and has high importance in urban area with social and environmental aspects. This paper addresses the segmentation of fused high resolution multispectral satellite images into distinct regions such as vegetation, buildings and barren land. Even though the IHS based fusion of satellite imagery improves the visual interpretati...

Orfeo Toolbox: a Complete Solution for Mapping from High Resolution Satellite Images

One of the main objectives of the Orfeo Toolbox (OTB) is the definition and the development of tools for the operational exploitation of the future sub-metric optic and radar images (rapid mapping, tridimensional aspects, change detection, texture analysis, pattern matching, optic and radar complementarities). The purpose of the OTB is to capitalize a methodological know-how in order to adopt a...

Metric Evaluation Pipeline for 3d Modeling of Urban Scenes

Publicly available benchmark data and metric evaluation approaches have been instrumental in enabling research to advance state of the art methods for remote sensing applications in urban 3D modeling. Most publicly available benchmark datasets have consisted of high resolution airborne imagery and lidar suitable for 3D modeling on a relatively modest scale. To enable research in larger scale 3D...
